April 18th 2021 Update

Queen’s Gambit is up to ~82,500 words, after a solid week of writing. I might finish the rough draft this month, but I’m not sure… a lot depends on how the story plays out from this point. Though I’ll find it horribly ironic if it ends up being one of the shorter volumes of the series. While I don’t have a release date for you, I do have news that Mario Wibisono is starting on the cover art as of tomorrow, so it’s getting closer! We’ll see how it works out.

Which, of course, makes me a bit bemused that I somehow was able to get the pre-order of Adept of Chaos up this past week. For whatever reason the description was easier to figure out, and I had a version of book 1’s cover that I could use for the pre-order. Before anyone asks, the 2022 date is not accurate. I put it as far in the future as I could get it, so that I didn’t run into a situation where I was scrambling to get it done in time. I expect to release sometime this summer, but I’d rather under-promise and over-deliver, if possible.

Going somewhat farther afield, I got cover art for book 2 of Soul Bound, since I knew exactly what I wanted to depict pretty much from the time I finished Dusk Gate. Crystal Rain did a lovely job on it, in my opinion! Also, I know that Xandra’s head looks a bit pointy, but that’s the fault of her hairstyle. I did a bit of a double-take before I realized that it made the hood rest funny. I hope everyone has a great week!

  1. I just thought she was a Goth dino-demi.
You know the ones with the ridges straight down like a mohawk?
Saw the pre-order for Adept, loved the color scheme on the cover.
Excited for Queen’s Gambit, I’ve been anxiously waiting to see how she navigates through all her new love interests. I really hope Circe Prime can save herself as she’s the only real Mother figure that cares and it bites that I am totally worried she’ll have to sacrifice herself before the end.

  2. To be fair, it almost made me think of the Eldar from Warhammer 40k, where they all seem to have really pointy heads (though that could be the armor). I just find it funny that her hairstyle led to that. I might have Nef grief her about it in the next book…

Interesting note about the cover of Adept of Chaos, that’s actually the same cover as Chosen of Chaos! That was the step before the final version, when the artist added all the oranges and yellows. I’d like to see it with some purples and greens added.

I will not give any replies regarding Queen’s Gambit, though. Too many potential spoilers… even if I feel a little like a pressure cooker, wanting to share. We’ll see how people like it!

  3. Let me ask this. Roughly what date/time frame(if it doesn’t add pressure to you) is Queen’s Gambit looking to be available? (I’m mostly asking since I’ve made it a habit to reread the previous books). Can’t wait for it, Soul Bounds 2, and Through the Flames book 4 πŸ˜ƒ!

Also I think my mother is going to buy and read Lilith’s Shadow because she wants to see why I fell in love with her. Her opinion isn’t needed, but I hope it’s good😬

  4. I honestly don’t know. I’m pretty confident that I’m going for finish the rough draft this coming week, but it’s not certain. After that I need to go through editing, and I need to schedule time with the editor (I can’t until I have a solid idea of how long the book will be). Generally speaking, editing takes about three weeks, so if the editor has an opening in late May, I can get Queen’s Gambit out in June. But it all depends on other people’s schedules at that point.

Hopefully she likes it! I’ll admit that sometimes I do my best to forget that my mother reads my books at times. It makes me faintly uncomfortable.

  5. Cool, cool! I’ll start my way through Lilith’s Journey, early-mid May, taking my time 😊 (If I really want to take my time, one a month). *Isn’t going to happen*. Though that might happen you eventually (and hopefully) revisit her journey

I bet! It’s nice she supports you though. Sorry for bringing up your discomfort πŸ˜‚

  6. Hopefully it satisfies when it gets out! It looks like the book is probably going to be around 100,000 words, but I’m not absolutely sure about that, yet.

Eh, it isn’t a big deal! Just one of those things that I think about sometimes. Teh issues involved in writing for your id!
