January 2nd 2022 Update

Happy New Year!

First of all, I have books to announce! Since I decided not to hang onto the files for long, the omnibi of Lilith’s Shadow are going live tomorrow. I went the rounds with myself over when to do it, and just decided to get the books out there as quickly as possible. So you’re aware, the only things that have changed in them is that I did a different foreword and afterward, so if you’re expecting different content, you’ll likely be disappointed.

I also have the pre-order for Talyn: Rebirth live, which is scheduled for January 17th, which was unintentionally one day short of the five year anniversary of publishing Ancient Ruins! You can find the link to all three pre-orders below, though I’ll note that as of the time of this writing, the cover of Talyn: Rebirth is not appearing. I’ve emailed Amazon to ask them to fix it, but we’ll see what happens.

The year has come to a close, and now I’m looking to the new year, and have come to a decision about what my goals are going to look like.

One of the things that I come back to when making my goals is to keep them modest and achievable. I don’t want to push myself too much and not be able to deal with the backlash of failure to finish my goals. So with that in mind, here are my goals for the year. I’ll note that some of them are relatively personal.

  • Finish writing three books. Two of these are already determined, Soul Bound 2 and Mistress of Chaos. The last book I’m going to leave up in the air. Hopefully it’ll be Obelisk of Blood, but we’ll see. I have plenty of books to write, so I’m sure I’ll hit this goal. Oh, and it’s phrased this way so it isn’t a matter of publishing the books, but just finishing writing them.
  • Publish an RPG supplement. I’ve paid a freelancer to write an ancestry for the apis, using the Pathfinder second edition ruleset, and it’s complete at this point. Mostly I need to figure out all of the legal stuff, get its layout and design done, then publish it. This one is pretty new to me, since it’s in a completely different boat than self-publishing novels.
  • Set aside two hours a week to work on my RPG stuff, just for fun.
  • Write a complete story I have no intention of publishing whatsoever, just to not have to worry about publishing standards or whether people will like it. 20,000 words sounds about right.
  • Exercise a little bit every day for January. If I can build up the habit, extend that small amount each month. Maybe increase the amount of exercising each month, but I’m not pushing it.

That’s it, though. Simple goals that I think will help me in the new year. I hope that all of you have a good year ahead of you!

  1. Happy New Year! I’d say the traditional good luck on the goals, but really, I wish you persistent motivation (esp on the exercise).

  2. Happy New Year as well!

As for the goals, part of my preparations to help with motivation is that I set up a recurring calendar entry on my phone at 10 AM every day for the month to remind me to exercise. Hopefully it helps!

  3. Obelisk of Blood doesn’t sound like a bee-song book (though I dearly hope I’m wrong there, it’s not much of a hope). Any idea when we’re going to revisit Joy Reborn?
Did they at least sell well enough to justify continuing the series at all?

  4. Nope, Obelisk of Blood is part of the Through the Fire series, which I’ve been promising to continue pretty much since it came out. Honestly, neither series has done great on the whole, which has made them somewhat lower priority… but Joy is going to happen eventually! I’m waiting on some art to do an omnibus of the Beesong books. When I get to it, the next book will be Apis & Asps.

  5. I wasn’t going to comment on anything this week, but here I am currently in a soft quarantine 😅. (Not testing but was in close proximity 2x to a person who tested positive). My counselor said it was considerate of me, but why would I risk infecting others if I currently can avoid it? I just don’t get it 🤷‍♀️

Good soft goals for you! I suspicion the hardest part will be getting used to exercise (BTW it takes 6-8 weeks to see full benefit…I recommend taking pictures or tracking progress to help)…Wait! The break might be hard too 🤔

Question about the omnibus stuff since I’ve never read or bought an omnibus collection (I want to get physical books since I may as well complete my collection😂.) I get it’s not different, but is it just the books jammed into “one” collection or have you taken some material out of each book to condense it?

Also this next question might be a rude (but I truly mean no offense in asking it), so feel *free to disregard it.* Why do you gravitate towards lesbian MC’s and not men? I’m not complaining or anything. I’m just curious and have too much time on my hands 😅

Hope you have a great week and year!!!

  7. Yeah, I don’t blame you at all on soft quarantining. I’d probably do the same if I had to.

With the exercise, what I’ve done is set a recurring task on my phone for 10 AM every day to tell me to exercise, which has helped me not forget a couple of times already. We’ll see what I do at the end of the month, but I’ll likely make another one-month task with slightly higher goals.

Re: Omnibus – Essentially, I take out the foreward/author’s note, character lists, story so far, and all of that stuff, leaving only the story for each volume (and the World Origins bit from Born a Queen, since that’s important!), then put it all into a single collection. I don’t remove any material at all. While I did consider revising and updating some minor stuff, I decided that would be better-served by waiting for a new edition in the end.

Re: Lesbians – This is a question that has come up in other spaces before, so not a worry about asking. It’s one I anticipated, and I figured I’d only share if people asked. Quite simply, I identify as transgender. Specifically, I identify as female, but I’m still attracted to females. However, I’m also far too lazy to go through the entire process of transitioning, and am not so uncomfortable in my skin that I feel like I need to. Secondarily, before I realized that I identified as trans (I grew up in a very Mormon city and never even heard of transsexualism until after I graduated from high school) I had several partially-written stories where I had a traditional male/female pairing, and in every case it fell apart, the male turned into a villain, or something of the sort, while the female lead ended up attracted to another woman. Things went much better when I started going with the flow in that regard.

I hope you didn’t catch anything, and that your year goes well!

  8. Then I shall probably buy the omnibus editions 🤔😁

Understandable on all accounts. I am sorry for prying (I’ve just been sitting on that question for a long time 😅) and for assuming you were cisgender. There’s no one way to be transgender (me personally, I have a strong preference for women but I’ve also discovered, “love is love,” clause inside of me.) Personally, I had no other choice in my experience and have moments where I forget I’m transgender 😅. I, however, realize that’s one very limited experience, so I still must apologize. I should not have assumed such. I was prepared to hear a different explanation or answer though this answer is just as fine. Just through me a tad though I expect to hear such a thing more in the future (I want to work with LGBT+ and disabled people predominantly)😅. I know you said female, but how would you like me to refer to you (either but specifically pronoun wise)?

  9. Hopefully you like them! I had to do some serious tweaking to make them fit into Amazon’s limits (paperbacks can only be… I can’t remember if it’s 824 or 828 pages for their print on demand service), so the font is relatively small. Just as a word of warning.

And don’t be sorry for prying! When I published I decided that it wasn’t something I’d volunteer, but if anyone asked I’d explain the situation. I’ve helped someone through transition as well, which is a good part of why I know I don’t have the determination to go through it myself. You didn’t know, and I don’t hold that against anyone. I am who I am, no more and no less.

As for how to refer to me, however you’d prefer. I’m comfortable being referred to as male or female pronouns. I spent ~8 years being referred to as female on a forum once, so I’ve gone both ways.

  10. Would it be possible to include Young Joy in an audiobook version of the Beesong Chronicles omnibus? I’d like to hear Reba Buhr do the voices. Joy’s voice at the end of Hives and Heroism was so cute. :D

  11. Um, maybe? That would require me to hire her to narrate it, which wouldn’t be cheap, but I’m not going to say it’s impossible either. I’d have to go through and get it properly edited and such… I’ll have to look at the logistics before I could say for sure. It’s under consideration, though.
