December 29th 2019 Update

Queen’s Move is edited and off to Alpha readers. I’m taking a brief break to rest and relax this week but hopefully I’ll be working on the next book after that. I really enjoyed writing Queen’s Move and hope that all of you enjoy reading it when it comes out.

I’m currently waiting on audible to approve Hell’s Ascendant. I don’t know how long this will take but it shouldn’t take more than a week or two. Crisis of Faith has been a bit delayed, but I think it won’t take too much longer likely will come out sometime in January.

In any case, I want to thank everyone for their support this year, and I really hope you have an excellent New Year’s, and that next year is great for all of you!

  1. Um… I think the message didn’t send. How well do you know the Warhammer 40K fantasy universe? Not the space one but the one with the Skaven and what not.

  2. Ugh! My message didn’t send three times! How well do you know the Warhammer 40K fantasy universe? Not the Spacemarines one but the one with the Skaven.

  3. Not a problem, it happens! Now, I think you’re talking about the Warhammer Fantasy universe, and the answer is… not very well? I know a little, since I have a few friends who play it and 40k, plus I’ve played several campaigns of Total War: Warhammer 1 and 2, so I know some of it.

  4. Well drat! Thank you, cause I was gonna ask you for some maps for the Warhammer Fantasy, (and you that was the one I meant. 😂) cause I have had an idea for a book I would like to try to write for it.😂

  5. Ahh, yeah, I’m afraid I don’t know much about the maps for Warhammer. I’m pretty sure you could find some online, but it isn’t my favorite setting, mostly because… well, all of the fiction of it I’ve seen makes out all the sides to be jerks.

  6. True. I have seen some of the reasons behind some of the races actions and I could see how they would do what they do, ya know? For all of them it really is just a point of view for them, cause I guarantee that the Britonian Empire never sees their actions as rather… Rude. Where as the Beastmen view the humans as rather genocidal with how they attack the Beastmen. You know what I mean?

  7. Oh, definitely. I suspect that one of the reasons that the different factions were created the way they were was to ensure there *weren’t* any ‘good guys’. Just less evil incarnate than Chaos.

  8. Yeah I could see that. I was kinda thinking of making like a Drizzt Do’Urden situation in my book. I would probably piss off a lot of hardcore Warhammer Fantasy fans.😂

  9. Yeah… that’d probably not go well, in some ways. Though I probably should warn, you really couldn’t publish something like that (fanfiction is a different boat), since GW is pretty possessive of their IP.

  10. I didn’t think about that. So many good races are used by so many people now-a-days it makes it hard to write any books without getting Copy write slammed it seems.

  11. Honestly, it isn’t a problem in most cases. You can have ratfolk without getting in trouble, the problem is when someone has trademarked the names. Games Workshop changed the names of the Space Marines to different names because they weren’t unique enough to protect their intellectual property. Adeptus Astartes, for instance.

You can create something similar to Warhammer easily enough, without getting hit by copyright claims. The problem comes in when you lift things whole-cloth, and don’t change them to make them *yours*. Ancient Ruins was written based off the same concept of a whole pile of dungeon core novels. I simply decided to take a premise (dungeon who wasn’t a jerk), and see where it took me. I adjusted things to my own vision.

Essentially, take inspiration from wherever you want to, adjust it, make it your own instead of a copy, and you can write almost anything.

  12. Ooh, I didn’t think about that. I thought it was the species as well not just the Names. And two questions. Firstly, what do you mean by “Whole Cloth”? And secondly, why did you have to put Webs and Wards up for such a late release date? I mean ugh! 😂😂 gotta go and make awesome books and then torture your readers by releasing’em so dern late.😂

  13. ‘Whole Cloth’ means the entire culture, the appearance, the details… it’d be like copying an artists artwork stroke for stroke. You can’t really claim that it’s completely your own creation, and trademarks exist to protect people’s stuff, since I’d hate it if people started putting out books about Sistina that weren’t accurate or mine. At least, not without permission.

As for Webs & Wards… I literally just got the edited version of the book back from my editor an hour ago. Amazon requires me to upload the book 4 days beforehand (so, on the 9th), and I aim for Monday releases, so… I chose pretty much the earliest date I could. Sorry!

  14. I am not mad I was just joking around. And I do see that about the claims and everything it just, it is frustrating for me because it seems like all my ideas are already used by other people. And thank you for the explanation for Whole Cloth that helped me a great deal.😁

  15. Fair, on joking around! I just figure it’s always good to offer an explanation.

But I’m glad the explanation helped. The big thing to me is to take inspiration from other people’s work, instead of copying it. And believe me, I don’t like trademarks much either. I have to google every hero or villain name in Lilith’s Shadow to double-check that it isn’t an existing hero/villain, or to make sure that the characters are very different if they have a suitably generic name.
