I tried to write the short story idea to introduce people to Through the Fire this past week, and it was easy enough… and then I realized it was a better prologue than what I had in mind. So I incorporated it into book 1 of Through the Fire, titled The Avatar’s Flames. I’m kind of bemused, because I intended not to get into the series until I got back from the convention at the end of the month, but it appears that isn’t going to happen. I have about 6500 words written on the book, and intend to get going on it for real this week. I don’t have any estimate on when I’ll release The Avatar’s Flames yet, but I’ll let everyone know when I do.
In other news, I’ve received word that recording of the audiobook of Down with the Queen is complete and it’s currently waiting on both an editor and proof-listener to go through it. I expect it to be complete this week, at which point I’ll have to wait for Audible to approve it. I expect it out this month, but it could be close.
I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m going out of town this month, to a convention called PaizoCon in Seattle over memorial day weekend. I’m hoping to attend a number of interesting panels and the like, and maybe to get a slot where I can try their upcoming playtest of Pathfinder 2nd Edition.
I hope everyone is doing well, and I very much hope that I can get The Avatar’s Flames out sooner than later.

Are you going to release it as a short story or do we have to wait for the book?

I’m not sure yet. See, if it was just going to be a short story, I wouldn’t be worried, but Amazon doesn’t allow me to release more than 10% of a book via other channels and keep it in Kindle Unlimited (which gets me a higher percentage of royalties, but requires the book to be exclusive). I’m pretty sure the short won’t be more than, oh… 4% of the book’s length, but I’m not sure.
The other aspect to it is that if I was going to release it the way I planned, I was going to get it fully edited, give it a cover and everything else before releasing it. It getting incorporated into the book throws a minor monkey wrench into those plans (especially since I already commissioned a cover for the short… gah).
So, I don’t know yet. It’ll definitely come out before the book, likely through my newsletter, but I’ll think on it. I hadn’t considered releasing it separately anyway, honestly… I just might. I’ll mull it over.
