Musings on Future Series

So, as I edit Ancient Dreams and see some commentary on Down with the Queen, I’ve thought about my project list… and have been forced to sigh in some frustration. See, one of my biggest problems is that I have too many ideas I want to write. I find coming up with the setting for a story easy, and sometimes a simple picture can spark the creation of a massive story.

Last year I put up a blog post talking about the stories I was interested in working on, and for some time I’ve been trying to go through the ones with the most interest to least. The reason I put those stories up last year was because I had their plots solidly outlined, and because in the case of Born a QueenSisters of Radiance, and Through the Fire, I had a large portion of the books already written. I reasoned that I could put them out relatively quickly and easily.

That part has changed since Born a Queen was published. After I finished the book, I realized that, bluntly put, I’ve improved an enormous amount as a writer since I’d written the other portions that I’d written. I mentioned this before, but I’ve decided to completely discard those drafts save for a few ideas and characters and write them from scratch.

My next project, after the Ancient Dreams omnibus, is still Through the Fire. After that… I’m not sure. I’ve said Sisters of Radiance so many times, but I’m not going to promise it anymore. I might write the next trilogy of Lilith’s Shadow at that point, but I’m also struggling with Broken Chains trying to turn into a book or series, as well as Ashes of Time giving a siren song as it wants to become a book.

However, one thing I want to make clear us just how many ideas I’m talking about when I say that I have lots of ideas competing to be written. At the moment, excluding the ones listed above, I have ten Fantasy book/series concepts, four Science Fiction, and three Science Fantasy ideas. Almost all of these ideas are such that they could be turned into trilogies of books or more… and I have others that currently aren’t even on the list.

I have years of material I want to write. The problem is finding the time and energy to write it, at least for me. So… just some thoughts on the future.
